Zoot Suit, written and directed by Luis Valdez, is a film adaptation released in 1981 of his successful stage production of the same name that debuted in Los Angeles in 1978 and went to Broadway in 1979. It is a story loosely based on a true crime story, the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial, and coupled with the racist and social injustices levied against Mexican-American youths that led to the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 in Los Angeles.
Zoot Suit is a landmark film putting Chicano/Latino stories, identities, and culture on the big screen. Edward James Olmos stars in one of his early and most memorable film roles embodying Pachuco identity and culture serving as the narrator-that speaks to the audience through the fourth wall. The film combines facts, music and fantasy to deliver a vibrant story that still resonates today.
