We’re excited to co-present American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez with RoxCine, the Roxie Theater’s program of Spanish language and US Latine/x films. The film is screening starting July 31st through August 7th. There will be a special Q&A with Luis Valdez and director David Alvarado following the 6:10 pm screening on July 31st, and a Q&A with director David only on the 3:30 pm screening on August 2nd.
American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez was a Sundance audience favorite earlier this year. This film a celebration of his life and legacy as a much lauded and celebrated playwright and filmmaker that brought the Chicano/Mexican-American experience to the stage and to the screen. He’s an artist and activist that worked alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta during the Delano grape boycott bringing theater to farmworkers through productions meant to entertain, educate and further the farmworker labor movement. His filmography includes: Zoot Suit, La Bamba, Dolores, and even a role in Coco.
About David Alvarado: David Alvarado, a Chicano documentary filmmaker, is passionate about science, technology, and human rights. His latest film We Are As Gods follows Stewart Brand’s attempt to resurrect the wooly mammoth and was adapted into an eight-part podcast by Audible Originals. Alvarado’s other notable works include Bill Nye: Science Guy, Blood Sugar Rising, and the BFI-nominated The Immortalists. He also produced and shot True Conviction. A graduate of Stanford University’s MFA in Documentary Filmmaking, Alvarado co-founded Structure Films, focusing on science and tech stories.
